Career Center Peer Mentors Lead and Inspire Students

Making decisions about a career can be an overwhelming and challenging task for students who juggle heavy schedules filled with coursework, jobs, extracurricular activities and families.

In an effort to help support students, the Cal State Northridge Career Center offers Peer Mentors, in addition to its services, to freshmen and sophomores looking for resources and guidance.

This semester, Career Center Peer Mentors, Blanca Mejia, Family and Consumer Sciences major, and Patrixia Galang, Kinesiology major, served as role models to motivate and engage their peers using Career Center resources and hosting

activities like the weekly Career Popcorn Hours, where students have an opportunity to meet them, learn about resources, and connect with the Career Center and other students. This semester, the Career Popcorn Hours take place on Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m., and Wednesdays from noon-2 p.m.

Peer Mentor Blanca Mejia, 20, knew her role would help her feel socially engaged and solidify her academics. “It feels empowering to be a support and meet students who are eager to explore career opportunities,” said Mejia.

Mejia says she enjoys the Career Popcorn Hours and feels that the weekly gatherings benefit students.

“They [Career Popcorn Hours] encourage students to begin career exploration earlier and connect with the CSUN Career Center. They are informal gatherings in which first and second year students can come work on their My Career Plan [a career development resource that freshmen can begin their first semester and follow throughout their first two years at CSUN] with their Career Peer Mentors, learn about Pathways and take the Pathways self-discovery activities, learn about resources for internships, and make an appointment with Monique, a Career Advisor,” said Mejia.

On Nov. 8, 2012, the CSUN Career Center will host a Freshman and Sophomore Year Success Panel in the Sierra Center Colleagues Room from 4-6 p.m. Six experienced CSUN students from different majors, including five Peer Mentors from Building Connections for Success, will serve as panelists and share tips on achieving college and career success.

A new major and career blog for first and second year students is also coming soon. The blog will be embedded within Pathways at and will allow students to connect with one another and share resources, thoughts and ideas.
